چکیده

s/esr/v3/n2/p239-247>. This study describes the activity pattern of the blue-eyed black lemur Eulemur macaco flavifrons for the firsttime and investigates the parameters, such as season orhabitat, that may influence the distribution of activity overthe 24 h cycle. Four groups of E. m. flavifrons in 2 forestfragments with different degrees of degradation were fol-lowed for 24 h each month over a 7-month periodbetween July 2004 and July 2005. Blue-eyed blacklemurs exhibited a bimodal activity pattern which peakedduring the morning and evening twilight. The groupsconsistently showed activity bouts both during the dayand at night, a behavior that corresponds to Tattersall’s(1987) definition of cathemerality. The proportion of il-luminated lunar disc and the nocturnal illumination indexwere positively associated with the amount of nocturnalactivity. Total activity, both diurnal and nocturnal, wassignificantly higher in the secondary than in the primaryforest. In view of our results, the cathemeral behavior ofE. m. flavifrons may best be explained as flexible re-sponses to a framework of varying environmental factors, each of which may enhance or inhibit activity within thelemurs’ range of adaptability. This temporal behavioralplasticity may be an adaptation to an erratic and severeclimate with frequent droughts and cyclones and unpre-dictable resource availability.

Nonhuman primate infections after organ transplantation.

Nonhuman primates, primarily rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis), and baboons (Papio spp.), have been used extensively in research models of solid organ transplantation, mainly because the nonhuman primate (NHP) immune system closely resembles that of the human. Nonhuman primates are also frequently the model of choice for preclinical testing of new immun...

Oral and Conjunctival Exposure of Nonhuman Primates to Low Doses of Ebola Makona Virus

Nonhuman primate (NHP) models of Ebola virus (EBOV) infection primarily use parenteral or aerosol routes of exposure. Uniform lethality can be achieved in these models at low doses of EBOV (≤100 plaque-forming units [PFU]). Here, we exposed NHPs to low doses of EBOV (Makona strain) by the oral or conjunctival routes. Surprisingly, animals exposed to 10 PFU by either route showed no signs of dis...

Foodborne Transmission of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy to Nonhuman Primates

Risk for human exposure to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)-inducing agent was estimated in a nonhuman primate model. To determine attack rates, incubation times, and molecular signatures, we orally exposed 18 macaques to 1 high dose of brain material from cattle with BSE. Several macaques were euthanized at regular intervals starting at 1 year postinoculation, and others were observed un...

Characterization of monkey enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and human typical and atypical EPEC serotype isolates from neotropical nonhuman primates.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) has been associated with infantile diarrhea and mortality in humans in developing countries. While diarrhea is also a major problem among primates kept in captivity, the role of E. coli is unclear. This study was designed to characterize diarrheagenic E. coli recovered from the feces of 56 New World nonhuman primates, primarily marmosets (Callithrix spp....

Nonhuman primate models for translational research in endometriosis.

Endometriosis, defined as the ectopic presence of endometrial-like cells, is associated with infertility and pelvic pain in women. Whereas pathogenesis and spontaneous evolution of endometriosis are still poorly understood, recurrences after surgical therapy or after medical treatment are common. Spontaneous endometriosis occurs only in women and in nonhuman primates (NHPs). Inbred rhesus monke...
